Assume a bettor won a KES 102 million SportPesa jackpot. How much of it does the winner actually keep? This is the breakdown of the tax they will pay, step by step. The figure is a working example, not a confirmed result. The same rules apply to anyone who wins a large prize, so the numbers are worth knowing whether you play or not.
The short answer
Winnings from betting, lotteries and prize competitions in Kenya attract a 20% withholding tax. The operator deducts it before paying the winner and sends it to KRA. If the win is KES 102,000,000:
- Jackpot won: KES 102,000,000
- Withholding tax at 20%: KES 20,400,000
- Income tax on the prize: nil, because the withholding tax is final
- Excise on the stake: nil for the winner, because the operator pays it
- Take-home: KES 81,600,000, which is 80% of the win
The betting winnings tax calculator does this sum for any amount, and shows the result with and without the stake deducted. The stake on a jackpot is usually small, so it changes the answer very little. Whether the stake can be deducted depends on the rule in force for the period, so confirm how the operator applies it. For the background, read betting tax changes: excise on stakes and tax on winnings.

Is the tax final?
For a resident, the withholding tax on winnings is generally a final tax. That means the winnings do not have to be added to other income and taxed again at the PAYE or income tax bands. A winner who is also employed does not pay extra income tax on the prize. This is different from salary, where the rules in how PAYE is calculated in Kenya apply. The operator should give a withholding certificate or a record of the deduction, and the winner should keep it. See withholding tax in Kenya explained for how withholding works more broadly.
What about the excise duty?
Excise duty on betting is charged on the stake, not on the winnings, and it is paid by the operator. A winner does not pay it separately, though it forms part of the cost built into the odds for every player.
Tax on what the money earns
The prize itself is taxed once. What happens next is different: the money will start to earn income, and that income is taxed too.
- Interest. Interest on bank deposits and money market funds attracts a withholding tax, which is also final. As an illustration only, if KES 81.6 million earned 10% in a year, the interest would be about KES 8.16 million, and a 15% withholding tax would take about KES 1.22 million, leaving roughly KES 6.94 million. - Dividends. Money put into a company pays dividends that are taxed when paid. See dividends and paying yourself from a company.
- Property. Rent from a property bought with the money is taxable, and a later sale may attract capital gains tax. See capital gains tax increased to 15 percent.
What a sensible winner does first
Large sums attract attention and pressure. A few steps help whether the prize is KES 102 million or KES 102,000:
- Keep the paperwork. Save the winning confirmation, the tax deduction record and the payment proof in one folder.
- Park the money safely. Put it in an insured bank account or a regulated money market fund while you think.
- Pay debts first. Clearing expensive loans is a guaranteed return.
- Set aside an emergency fund. Six months of expenses is the usual rule.
- Decide before you are asked. Agree in advance what you will give and to whom.
- Take advice. A tax adviser and a licensed financial planner cost little compared with the sum involved.

Frequently asked questions
Does a winner pay more tax if the win is bigger? No. The rate is a flat 20% of the winnings, so a larger win means a larger tax but the same rate.
Can the winnings be taxed twice? Not as winnings. The prize is taxed once at withholding. The income the money later earns is taxed separately.
Who pays the tax, the winner or the operator? The operator withholds it from the prize and pays it to KRA. The winner receives the balance.
Are these figures confirmed for this win? No. The KES 102 million figure is an assumption used for the working. The exact amount received depends on how the operator applies the rules, so check with the operator.
