Free Kenya tax calculators in one place
KenyaTax brings the most common Kenyan tax and payroll calculations together on one independent website. Whether you want to check a payslip, estimate rental income tax, work out VAT on an invoice or find the duty on an imported car, each calculator shows its working line by line, so you can see how every figure is reached rather than trusting a single number.
Tax in Kenya changes often. Finance Acts adjust rates and thresholds, deductions such as SHIF and the Housing Levy have replaced older ones, and NSSF limits step up every February. Our calculators read their rates from a table that is reviewed and dated, which means the answer you see follows the rules for the date you choose, including past years.
Calculators for employees
If you earn a salary, the PAYE calculator Kenya employees use most turns your gross pay into net pay. It applies:
- PAYE income tax in bands, with personal and insurance relief;
- NSSF contributions in Tier I and Tier II;
- SHIF (the Social Health Insurance Fund that replaced NHIF);
- the Affordable Housing Levy;
- deductions for pension, mortgage interest and post-retirement medical cover.
You can also work backwards from the take-home pay you want to the gross salary you need, generate a payslip as a PDF, test the tax on a bonus, overtime or commission, value a company car or housing benefit, estimate your annual return from a P9 form, and calculate severance, notice pay, leave pay and the tax on terminal dues.
Calculators for landlords and property owners
Landlords can use the rental income tax calculator to see whether Monthly Rental Income tax (MRI) at 7.5% of gross residential rent applies, or whether the annual income tax route is required for commercial property, company landlords and higher earners. You can enter many properties at once, include vacancies, expenses and withholding tax credits, and download a summary for your accountant. Related tools cover withholding tax on rent, capital allowances, capital gains tax on selling land or buildings and income from short-stay lets such as Airbnb.
Calculators for businesses
Business owners will find tools for corporation tax, instalment tax and its due dates, turnover tax, VAT returns, the VAT registration threshold of KES 5,000,000, withholding tax and withholding VAT, excise duty, the investment deduction, and the penalties and interest charged for late filing. There are also comparisons for choosing between a sole proprietorship and a limited company, and guidance for freelancers and digital creators earning from platforms such as YouTube and Upwork.
Calculators for importers
The car import duty calculator estimates import duty, excise duty, VAT, the Import Declaration Fee and the Railway Development Levy from a vehicle's CRSP value, age and engine size, and checks the age limit for used vehicles. Other tools cover general goods duty, total landed cost, motorcycles and the duty-free allowance for returning residents.
How to get an accurate result
- Start with the right figures. Use your payslip, P9, tenancy agreements or invoices rather than estimates.
- Choose the right date. Rates differ by period, so set the calculation date if you are checking a past or future month.
- Read the breakdown. Each line explains where an amount comes from, which helps you spot a missing relief or an unexpected deduction.
- Compare with your records. If a payslip differs from the result, the usual causes are benefits, loan deductions or a different pay month.
- Confirm important figures. Results are estimates; KRA, NSSF, SHA and your employer decide what is actually deducted.
Key Kenyan taxes explained
- PAYE: income tax deducted from employment pay each month and paid to the Kenya Revenue Authority by your employer.

- Housing Levy: the contribution that funds affordable housing, shared by employee and employer.
- VAT: a consumption tax charged by registered businesses on taxable sales.
- Corporation tax: tax on company profits, normally paid in instalments.
- Turnover tax: a simple tax on the gross sales of small businesses.
- Withholding tax: tax deducted when certain payments, such as fees, rent and dividends, are made.
- Capital gains tax: tax on the gain from selling property or shares.

Important dates for Kenyan taxpayers
Employers pay PAYE and file monthly returns early in the following month. VAT, turnover tax, withholding tax and Monthly Rental Income tax are generally due by the 20th of the month after the transaction. Individuals file their annual income tax return on iTax by 30 June, and companies pay instalment tax on set dates during the year. Late filing and late payment attract penalties and interest, so use the penalty calculator if you are behind.

Frequently asked questions
What is KenyaTax?
KenyaTax is a free, independent set of Kenya tax calculators and guides covering PAYE and net salary, NSSF, SHIF, the Housing Levy, rental income tax, VAT, corporation tax, withholding tax, penalties and import duty.
Is KenyaTax affiliated with the Kenya Revenue Authority?
No. KenyaTax is independent and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to the Kenya Revenue Authority, the Government of Kenya or any other government body. Links to KRA's iTax portal are ordinary outbound links.
Are the results accurate?
They follow the published rules and rates for the date you choose and show their working, but they are estimates for information only. KRA, NSSF, SHA and your employer decide the amounts actually deducted, so confirm important figures with them or a registered tax agent.
Do you store my salary or other figures?
Not unless you choose to. Calculations run as you use the page and your inputs are not saved or logged. If you create an optional account and press Save, that result and its inputs are kept in your account until you delete them. If you share a result link, the figures are in that link, so share it only with people you trust.
How is PAYE calculated in Kenya?
Gross pay less allowable deductions such as NSSF, SHIF, the Housing Levy, pension and mortgage interest gives taxable pay. Tax is charged on it in bands, then personal relief and insurance relief are subtracted. The PAYE calculator shows each step.
What deductions come off a Kenyan payslip?
Typically PAYE, NSSF, SHIF and the Housing Levy, plus any loans, SACCO contributions or voluntary pension. NSSF limits rise each February, and SHIF replaced NHIF in October 2024.
Do I need to file a tax return if I am employed?
Yes. Anyone with a KRA PIN and an income tax obligation files an annual return by 30 June, even if PAYE covered the tax. It can bring a refund if reliefs were missed. Our P9 calculator estimates the result.
When are Kenyan taxes due?
PAYE is due by the 9th of the following month, VAT, turnover tax, withholding tax and Monthly Rental Income tax by the 20th, and individuals' annual returns by 30 June. Always confirm dates with KRA.
Do landlords pay tax on rent, and how much?
Yes. Resident landlords whose residential rent falls in the Monthly Rental Income range pay a flat percentage of gross rent. Commercial rent, company landlords and larger portfolios use the annual route, where expenses are deducted. The rental income calculator shows which applies.
Do I need a KRA PIN?
You need one to work, run a business, own rental property, import goods, register a vehicle or apply for many licences and loans. Registration on iTax is free, and our guide explains the steps.
How often are the tax rates updated?
Rates are held in a dated table, shown on each calculator with the date they were last verified. They are updated when a Finance Act or notice changes them, and past rates are kept so you can calculate earlier periods.
Can I calculate tax for a previous year?
Yes. Most calculators have a calculation date box. Pick a past date and the rates and rules in force then are used, for example the old NHIF table or earlier NSSF limits.
Are the calculators free to use on a phone?
Yes. They are free, work on any modern phone and need no account or sign-up. An account is optional and only needed if you want to save results.
Estimates for information only. Not tax or financial advice.
