The age rule for imported vehicles
Kenya does not allow the import of vehicles that are too old. The rule limits used vehicles to a maximum age of 8 years, counted from the year of manufacture. It exists mainly for road safety and emissions reasons, and it is enforced when the vehicle is cleared at the port. A car that fails the test can be refused entry, or required to be re-exported, which is an expensive mistake after shipping costs have already been paid.
How the checker decides
The checker works with calendar years. Enter the year of manufacture or first registration, and optionally the date you expect the vehicle to arrive. The age is that arrival year minus the vehicle's year. If the result is not more than the maximum age, the vehicle is eligible. The checker also shows the oldest year that is eligible on the arrival date, which is useful when you browse listings abroad.
Because the test uses calendar years, a car's eligibility can change on 1 January. A vehicle that is exactly at the limit this year will be too old next year, and a vehicle that arrives in December can pass when the same car arriving in January would fail. Shipping takes weeks, so always use the expected arrival date, not the purchase date.
A worked example
On a date in 2026, a car manufactured in 2018 is eight years old, and so is at the limit and eligible. A car from 2017 is nine years old and is not. The page shows the oldest eligible year for the date you choose, with the limit coming from the rates held for this site.
Year of manufacture versus year of registration
The rule refers to the year of manufacture, which appears on the vehicle's chassis plate and export documents. Some listings only show the year of first registration, which can be a year later than manufacture, especially for Japanese vehicles. If the two differ, use the earlier year to be safe, and ask the seller for the export certificate that shows the manufacture date.
What else is checked at import
Age is one of several checks. Used vehicles also need pre-shipment inspection by an approved inspection company in the country of export, a clean export certificate, a correct description that matches the chassis number and, depending on rules in force, compliance with emission and safety standards. The vehicle's steering side and other features may also be tested. The calculator only tests age.
After the age check
Once you know a car is eligible, use the car import duty calculator to estimate the taxes. Cars close to the age limit are valued at a lower customs value because of depreciation, so the taxes are lower, but there is more risk if the shipment is delayed past the end of the year.
Motorcycles and other vehicles
The motorcycle import duty calculator applies the same age idea to motorcycles. Commercial vehicles and heavy trucks can have different age limits or conditions, so check the rules for the category you are importing.
About the rule
The age limit comes from the rates held for this site and is marked unverified until checked against the current notice. Confirm the rule with KRA, KEBS or your clearing agent before you buy, because policies on vehicle imports have changed from time to time. This tool is a guide for information only.
Questions to ask the exporter
Before you pay a deposit, ask for a copy of the export certificate, the auction sheet or inspection report and photographs of the chassis plate. Compare the manufacture date and the chassis number on each document, and make sure the listing's year agrees with them. Ask when the vessel is expected to arrive and whether there is a risk of delay or transshipment, because a car that arrives after the new year may count as a year older. Keep the documents together, since your clearing agent will need the same set to lodge the entry.

Frequently asked questions
Which date counts, purchase or arrival?
Arrival. The age is measured when the vehicle is cleared, so a shipment that arrives after 1 January can count as a year older.
Is manufacture year the same as registration year?
Not always. Use the earlier year if in doubt and ask for the export certificate.
Does this check emissions or safety?
No. It tests age only. Other inspections apply.
