Pension benefits and tax
A registered pension scheme is designed to encourage saving for retirement, so contributions get tax relief and the fund itself grows largely free of tax. The tax comes at the end, when benefits are paid out. The way a lump sum is taxed depends on why and when you take it, which is why this calculator asks you to choose between a retirement withdrawal and an early withdrawal.
Retirement, ill-health and long membership
Since 1 July 2025, pension and provident fund payments are exempt from income tax when they are paid at the retirement age set by the scheme rules, on retirement because of ill-health, after 20 years from joining the fund, as gratuity or retirement annuity, or on death. The calculator shows tax of nil for this option. Before that date a banded table taxed lump sums above a tax-free amount, and the calculator still applies that earlier table when you test a date before 1 July 2025.
Early withdrawal
If you withdraw from a registered pension fund, provident fund, NSSF or individual retirement fund before 20 years from the date you joined and before the retirement age, tax is withheld on a banded scale: 10% on the first KES 288,000, 25% on the next KES 100,000 and 30% on everything above KES 388,000. Confirm with your administrator which conditions apply to you before choosing this option.
A worked example
A retirement lump sum of KES 1,000,000 is exempt, giving tax of KES 0.00 and a net payment of KES 1,000,000.00. If the same sum were taken early, the tax would be KES 237,400.00.
NSSF benefits
NSSF pays benefits under the NSSF Act, including an age benefit, invalidity benefit and survivors' benefit, and in some cases a withdrawal of part of the benefit. The tax treatment of NSSF payments follows the Income Tax Act and has changed in the past, so the safest route is to ask NSSF what it will withhold, then use this calculator as a rough check.
Planning points
- Compare options. Some schemes allow a lump sum plus a monthly pension. Taking part as a pension can keep each year's income in lower bands.
- Ask for the tax computation. Administrators must tell you what they will withhold. Ask for the calculation and compare it with this page.
- Keep records. Keep your benefit statement and any tax certificate for your annual return.
- Employer contributions. The tax-free treatment of your own contributions depends on the cap on deductions and the scheme being registered with the Retirement Benefits Authority.
What the calculator does not check
It does not verify your age, scheme registration or membership period, and it does not apply any exemption that might apply to a particular payment. The result is an estimate for information only, so confirm the treatment with your scheme administrator, the Retirement Benefits Authority or KRA.
Questions to ask your scheme
Before you decide to take a lump sum, ask the administrator whether you qualify for the retirement treatment, what tax it will withhold and how the figure is calculated, and whether you can leave part of the benefit in the fund. Ask whether your benefit includes your own contributions, your employer's contributions and investment returns, because the split can matter for tax. Get the answers in writing, and compare them with this calculator before you sign the withdrawal form.
The lump sum is only one part of retirement planning. Compare the after-tax cash with the pension you would receive if you left the money invested, think about your expenses over the next decade and ask a licensed financial adviser, not only a tax adviser, before you choose.
